Licence agreement#

There is no licence agreement. What ships on an image is a placeholder that opens by saying it has not been through legal review and is not the agreement the product will be sold under. This page says the same, at the URL where a reader would look.

Why a placeholder ships at all#

Not as a stand-in for terms. It is there so that an image does not carry the upstream vendor's commercial end-user agreement instead — a document that governs nothing you obtained from Wheelhouse and would tell you that it did.

The placeholder lives on an installed system at /usr/share/doc/wheelhouse/TERMS.txt, and it does three useful things while the real document does not exist: it says plainly that it is not final, it states what is settled, and it points at the third-party licences and the source record.

What is settled, and is true today#

  • Most of what runs on the machine is free software written by other people — the Linux kernel, Debian, VyOS and the daemons that do the routing. Each keeps its own licence, and nothing in the Wheelhouse grant restricts any right those licences give you.
  • The parts Wheelhouse wrote are the agent, the web interface and the installer. They are proprietary, licensed rather than sold, and they are separate programs from the GPL software they drive.
  • You may run the image on hardware you own, take it apart and inspect it. You may not redistribute the proprietary parts.
  • There is no affiliation with the VyOS project or Sentrium S.L., and VyOS is their registered trademark.
  • Warranty and liability are to be set by the final terms. Until then, assume the software is provided as-is with no warranty — which is what every third-party licence in the image says about its own part in any case.

What a real agreement would have to cover#

Grant, term, restrictions, warranty disclaimer, liability cap and governing law. That is the one item on this product's remaining list that needs a lawyer rather than an engineer; everything around it is engineering that is already done.
